Louisiana State Museum Reaccreditation Decision Delayed Until June 2027 The Art Newspaper International Art News And Events
The Louisiana State Museum system has not yet received a reaccreditation decision from the American Alliance of Museums, even as two other Louisiana institutions were approved in the group's latest round. The statewide system, which oversees ten museums and historic sites, remains accredited for now, but its application has been tabled until the AAM's June 2027 meeting.
The status matters because AAM accreditation is widely treated as a benchmark for governance, collections care, and institutional stability. LSM was last accredited in 2011. In a statement relayed by the museum, director Rebecca Mackie said the tabling gives the system time to clarify aspects of its governance and operational structure and to strengthen coordination, accountability, and implementation across its network of sites.
AAM said that when a museum is not named in a press release after an accreditation meeting, it generally means no final decision was issued, or that the matter was deferred or tabled. In this case, tabling delays a decision for one year so specific issues can be addressed. Mackie also said AAM told the museum that roughly 30 percent of museums are tabled during commission meetings, and that many ultimately secure accreditation once concerns are resolved.
The Louisiana State Museum system has faced a difficult stretch in recent years, marked by lawsuits, public controversy, and an unfavorable audit. Its collections include paintings by Gertrude Morgan, Louis Armstrong's first cornet and bugle, and a substantial trove of Mardi Gras memorabilia, underscoring the cultural weight of the institution's holdings.
The AAM's latest announcement did include reaccreditation for two Louisiana museums outside the state system: the Meadows Museum of Art in Shreveport and the Historic New Orleans Collection in New Orleans. For LSM, the next two years will likely determine whether a troubled governance period can be translated into a stronger institutional footing.
