Rutte, Rubio Meet to Coordinate on Iran War, Russia-Ukraine Crisis

(MENAFN) NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met on Wednesday in Washington to discuss the ongoing war involving Iran and efforts to address the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to reports.

The discussions focused on “increasing coordination and burden shifting with NATO Allies,” a spokesperson said.

The meeting took place amid tensions within the alliance, as US President Donald Trump has intensified criticism of member states for not assisting in securing the Strait of Hormuz. Trump described the alliance's lack of participation in protecting the vital waterway as “a mark on NATO that will never disappear,” arguing that safeguarding the route is not solely Washington’s responsibility and even threatening a US withdrawal from the organization.
