Four Killed in Plane Crash in Southern Brazil

(MENAFN) A small aircraft plunged into a restaurant in the coastal city of Capão da Canoá, in Brazil's southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, on Friday, killing all four people on board, fire authorities confirmed.

The dead were identified as the pilot, the co-pilot, and two businesspeople traveling aboard the aircraft.

The single-engine Piper JetPROP DLX — registered with Brazil's civil aviation regulator — was en route to Ibitinga, in the state of São Paulo, when it went down at approximately 10:40 a.m. local time, striking a closed restaurant in a residential neighborhood.

Preliminary reports cited by a Radio station indicated the plane was flying at low altitude before it began losing height and impacted the ground. The crash triggered a violent explosion, captured in real time by the city's security camera network. Footage subsequently shared by residents with media showed a towering mushroom cloud of fire erupting above the area.

Several surrounding homes sustained damage. Authorities moved swiftly to evacuate nearby residents, and officials confirmed no additional casualties were recorded beyond the four fatalities on board.

The cause of the crash remains under active investigation.
