Blast Heard Near Punjab BJP Office In Chandigarh


(MENAFN- Live Mint) An explosion was heard outside the office of the Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in Chandigarh on Wednesday evening. The incident led to panic and police cordoning the area, news agency PTI reported.

There were no reports of any casualties.

The explosion was heard around 5 pm, the head of the state BJP's media cell Vineet Joshi was quoted as saying.

A scooter parked outside the building in Sector 37 was damaged, the report added.

What did police say?

Senior police officers, including Senior Superintendent of Police Kanwardip Kaur, as well as a team of the Central Forensic Laboratory rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.

Kanwardeep Kaur said,“At around 5 PM, we got information that an explosion was heard near the BJP Office in Sector 37. Our teams reached here, and prima facie it appears that a small, crude type of bomb was thrown here. NIA, FSL, Chandigarh Police, Crime Branch and Crime Cell teams have arrived here. We are investigating...”

There was little clarity on what had happened. Further details are awaited.

'Scooty, car damaged'

Vinit Joshi, BJP Media Incharge, said,“... At around 5 PM, a blast occured here, and a lot of smoke was seen. There was an atmosphere of panic after the blast.”

'A scooty, a car were damaged. This is a matter of concern. A blast taking place near the party office is a matter of concern," he said.

Joshi added, "For the last 4 days, the BJP State Wrking President was staying here and a blast taking place at this time, is a serious concern..."

'This is unfortunate'

Union Minister SP Singh Baghel reacted to the incident, saying, "This is unfortunate. There is no place for violence in democracy. Although it was a low-intensity blast, the agencies are taking it seriously... Certainly, the police and agencies will investigate it, and action will be taken against the culprits."
