Pope Leo XIV Tells Trump to Pursue Diplomatic Solution to Iran War

(MENAFN) Pope Leo XIV has encouraged US President Donald Trump to explore a diplomatic resolution to the escalating conflict in Iran, as the number of casualties rises throughout the region.

"I'm told that President Trump has recently stated that he would like to end the war. Hopefully he's looking for an off-ramp. ... Hopefully he's looking for a way to decrease the amount of violence," the pontiff told reporters on Tuesday outside his residence in Castel Gandolfo near Rome.

The remarks represented a rare and direct intervention from Leo, who has increasingly condemned the hostilities that began after joint US–Israeli airstrikes on Iran on February 28. The confrontation has since expanded across the Middle East, resulting in thousands of deaths and unsettling global energy markets.

The pope also expressed deep worry about the growing civilian toll and urged an immediate cessation of hostilities ahead of Easter on April 5.

"There have been so many deaths, including innocent children," he stated. "Let's continually appeal for peace. … There are too many people who promote fighting, violence (and) war."
Earlier on Sunday, the pontiff had emphasized that God does not hear the prayers of leaders who wage wars and whose "hands [are] full of blood."
