Zelenskyy Expects Mideast Nations to Assist with Diesel Supplies
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed Friday that Kyiv is leveraging its hard-won expertise in countering Iranian drones as a bargaining chip to secure critical diesel supplies from Middle Eastern nations — a strategic exchange that signals Ukraine's expanding diplomatic reach beyond the European theater.
Speaking to a Kyiv-based broadcaster, Zelenskyy said he is "closing the issue" of diesel supplies to Kyiv during his ongoing regional tour, framing the visit as a mission with concrete, deliverable outcomes.
The Ukrainian leader argued that Kyiv holds a distinct advantage that Middle Eastern governments urgently need — battlefield-tested knowledge in neutralizing Iranian Shahed drones. He stressed that protection against Iranian drones remains the "main challenge" for the region, despite the significant air defense systems those nations already possess, positioning Ukraine as an indispensable security partner in the fight against Tehran's drone arsenal.
Zelenskyy disclosed that he held two "important meetings" during the trip, describing both as "positive" for Ukraine, though he declined to elaborate on the parties involved or specifics discussed.
In Saudi Arabia, Zelenskyy said his country and the Gulf kingdom reached an "important arrangement" on defense cooperation. His sit-down with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman covered the evolving security situation across the Middle East and Gulf region, as well as fuel supply developments.
On the sidelines, Zelenskyy met with a contingent of Ukrainian military specialists who have been embedded in Saudi Arabia for the past week, advising local forces on techniques to detect, intercept, and neutralize Iranian drone threats.
The emerging partnership marks a notable pivot — with Ukraine transforming its wartime experience into diplomatic and economic leverage on the global stage.
