Russia Urges Japan to Uphold Pacifist Constitution, Learn from History
(MENAFN) Russia has cautioned Japan to heed historical lessons and remain committed to the pacifist principles outlined in its constitution, warning that failure to do so could repeat past mistakes.
At a regular briefing, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that Japan has been steadily moving toward remilitarization, including acquiring strike weapons such as cruise missiles, which “cannot be classified as defensive weapons.”
Zakharova emphasized that Russia has repeatedly warned Japan about the “destructive consequences of sharply increasing military spending,” particularly when it involves weapons that could threaten the security of neighboring countries, including Russia itself.
She added that Japan’s defense policies have a profoundly negative impact on regional and global stability, heightening tensions in the Asia-Pacific and potentially sparking a new arms race.
Noting the security implications for Russia, Zakharova stated that if new missile threats arise against Russian territory, Moscow will respond and take “necessary measures to ensure its defense capability.”
