US Embassy Issues Warning to Citizens of Possible Threat in Nigeria
(MENAFN) The US diplomatic mission in Nigeria has issued a warning indicating that American government facilities and schools connected to the United States could face a potential terrorist threat, according to a notice released Monday.
The advisory urged American citizens in the country to remain cautious and adhere to recommended safety measures while staying in Nigeria. “The US Embassy in Abuja informs US citizens of a possible terrorist threat against US facilities and US affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the advisory states.
Officials also outlined several precautionary steps for US nationals residing in or traveling through the country. These recommendations include ensuring mobile phones remain fully charged, maintaining heightened awareness in public areas, avoiding crowded spaces and demonstrations, varying daily travel routes, and identifying emergency exits in buildings.
Authorities did not disclose specific information regarding the origin or nature of the potential threat. However, the alert comes at a time of heightened global tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, which has raised concerns about possible retaliatory actions, according to reports.
The situation in the Middle East intensified on February 28 when the United States and Israel conducted airstrikes on Iran, reportedly resulting in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei along with several senior officials. Iran later responded by launching extensive missile and drone attacks aimed at Israel and US military bases located across the Gulf region.
Nigeria’s government has expressed concern about the growing hostilities and has called on all sides to exercise restraint in order to prevent further escalation. Officials from the country’s Foreign Ministry urged an immediate reduction in tensions and encouraged a return to diplomatic dialogue consistent with international law.
Nigerian authorities also warned that continued fighting could pose risks to both regional and global stability. At the same time, they advised Nigerian citizens currently in Iran and Gulf countries to remain vigilant and stay away from military installations or large public gatherings.
