Profile Articles Activity

I am Reader in Visual Culture in the School of Architecture, Art and Design at the University of Portsmouth, UK, where I have been teaching, supervising and researching since 2008. My previous academic jobs include a decade as Lecturer in History of Art and Fellow by Special Election at St. Catherine's College in the University of Oxford. I have also held research fellowships at the Houghton Library, Harvard University; jointly at the Victoria and Albert Museum and Royal College of Art; and at the Paul Mellon Centre for British Art, London.

After graduating from the University of Aberdeen in Cultural History, my doctorate at the University of Oxford was on the circus in late 18th-century England. Subsequent research interests have included the history of the souvenir; the branching form in scientific visual culture; the relationship of art and neuroscience; and the impact of globalisation on the visual arts. Two of my major curatorial and commissioning projects are the Wellcome Collection exhibition 'Brains: the Mind as Matter' (London 2012; Manchester 2013); and 'Frontiers Reimagined: Art That Connects Us' with Sundaram Tagore at the Venice Biennale in 2015.
