Curfew Remains in Northern Pakistan After Deadly Anti-US Protests
(MENAFN) Curfew measures remain in place across northern Pakistan after violent anti-US demonstrations erupted in response to the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Local authorities reported that a three-day curfew was imposed and military forces deployed Monday after clashes between protesters and security personnel in Skardu, Shigar, and other areas of the Gilgit-Baltistan region.
“The situation is now normal and a curfew is still in place,” said Shabbir Mir.
At least 25 people, including one security officer, were killed and dozens injured in protests across the country. In Gilgit-Baltistan alone, 13 people, including a security officer, died during confrontations. In Karachi, ten people were killed and over 60 injured during demonstrations outside the US Consulate. Two more fatalities occurred in Islamabad as protesters approached the US Embassy.
The provincial Sindh government suspended several police officers following security lapses at the US Consulate in Karachi.
Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Pakistan announced that all visa appointments through March 6, including at Lahore and Karachi consulates, were cancelled “due to the current security situation.” Operations at the Consulate General in Peshawar were also temporarily suspended.
