The so-called“Blood Moon” will be visible in Costa Rica in the early hours of Tuesday, March 3, 2026, when the first total lunar eclipse of the year occurs. The phenomenon will allow the totality phase to be seen before sunrise.

According to NASA data, the total eclipse will be visible in the Americas during the early hours of the day. In the case of Costa Rica, the most eagerly awaited moment will coincide with the moon setting on the western horizon.

Eclipse times in Costa Rica

According to the Cientec Foundation and the Time and Date platform, this will be the schedule in national time (UT-6):

. 2:44 a.m. The penumbral phase begins.

. 3:50 a.m. The partial phase begins.

. 5:04 a.m. The total phase begins.

. 5:33 a.m. Maximum point of the eclipse.

. 5:52 a.m. The Moon sets on the horizon.

The final phases of the eclipse will not be visible from the country, as the satellite will have set.

The totality stage will last a total of 58 minutes and 58.1 seconds.

Why is it called a Blood Moon?

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth is positioned between the Sun and the full Moon. The Earth's shadow completely covers the lunar disk.

During totality, the Earth's atmosphere scatters blue light and allows reddish tones to pass through. This effect causes the Moon to take on a coppery or dark red color.

Recommendations for viewing

NASA has indicated that the phenomenon is safe to observe with the naked eye. No special equipment is required.

It is recommended to find a clear spot facing west and away from artificial lights. Binoculars can help to better distinguish details on the lunar surface.
