Death Toll Rises to Sixty-Eight Due to Severe Flooding in Brazil

(MENAFN) Days of relentless rainfall in Minas Gerais have led to catastrophic flooding that has claimed at least 68 lives since Monday, authorities confirmed, as search-and-rescue missions persist under ongoing weather alerts.

The Minas Gerais State Fire Department reported that additional victims were found in the aftermath of heavy flooding that struck the cities of Juiz de Fora and Uba.

According to official figures, 62 of the deaths were recorded in Juiz de Fora, while six occurred in Uba. Authorities emphasized that operations remain underway to locate five individuals still missing. They also noted that landslides triggered by saturated terrain caused multiple residential structures to collapse.

The National Center for Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disasters warned that intense rainfall is expected to persist, heightening the likelihood of further flooding and sudden flash floods across already impacted areas.

In response, state and federal agencies have mobilized civil defense units, law enforcement personnel, and medical teams to provide emergency assistance to affected communities.

Earlier, the government of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced plans to distribute additional financial aid to municipalities, aiming to support families displaced and left without shelter due to the disaster.
