Trump Raises Doubts About Iran’s Commitment to Nuclear Deal

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump claimed Saturday that Iran came close to reaching a nuclear agreement but then withdrew, raising doubts about Tehran’s willingness to finalize a deal.

Speaking to Axios, Trump said, "got close and then pulled back — close and then pulled back," adding that he "understood from that that they don't really want a deal."

Trump described his most recent conversation with Benjamin Netanyahu as "great," emphasizing, "We're on the same wavelength."

Outlining potential approaches for the ongoing US military operations against Iran, he stated, "I can go long and take over the whole thing, or end it in two or three days and tell the Iranians: 'See you again in a few years if you start rebuilding (your nuclear and missile programs).'" He further suggested that Iran would require "several years" to recover from the latest attacks.

Trump accused Iran of rebuilding some of the nuclear facilities previously targeted during strikes by the US and Israel in June 2025, noting that "Operation Midnight Hammer" last June set the stage for the current "Operation Epic Fury."

The joint US-Israel operation commenced early Saturday, with both countries citing threats posed by the "Iranian regime."

The strikes followed the most recent round of US-Iran nuclear negotiations, held in Geneva on Thursday, which both sides described as serious and constructive under Oman’s mediation.
