Guterres Laments Missed Diplomacy After US-Israeli Strikes on Iran

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed profound regret Saturday over the breakdown of diplomacy following US and Israeli military strikes on Iran.

Speaking at an emergency UN Security Council session, Guterres said, "International law and international humanitarian law must always be respected," emphasizing that "we are witnessing a grave threat to international peace and security."

He warned that "military action carries the risk of igniting a chain of events that no one can control in the most volatile region of the world." Stressing that peaceful resolution remains essential, Guterres stated, "There is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes" and highlighted that "genuine dialogue and negotiations" are the only path to lasting peace.

Referring to the latest round of US-Iran nuclear talks in Geneva, which concluded Thursday under Omani mediation, he said, “I deeply regret that this opportunity of diplomacy has been squandered." Both sides had described the discussions as serious and constructive.

Guterres cautioned that failing to return to diplomacy risks a broader conflict with severe consequences for civilians and regional stability, urging all parties to "return immediately to the negotiating table, notably on the Iranian nuclear program."
