Iran’s FM Rejects Trump’s Claim on Missile Capabilities
(MENAFN) Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Wednesday rejected claims by US President Donald Trump that Tehran is developing missiles capable of striking the US mainland, saying the country’s missile program is “defensive in nature,” as stated by reports.
In an interview with an Indian news outlet, Araghchi emphasized that Iran’s missiles are “purely for deterrence” and intended to protect the nation.
Trump, in his State of the Union address on Tuesday, warned that he is considering military action if Iran does not abandon its nuclear and long-range ballistic missile programs. “They’ve already developed missiles that can threaten Europe and our bases overseas and they’re working to build missiles that will soon reach the United States of America,” he said. He added that Iran had been warned against rebuilding its weapons program, accusing Tehran of pursuing “sinister ambitions.”
Responding, Araghchi said the US president has “become a victim of fake news.” He reiterated that Iran is not developing missiles capable of reaching the US, noting that the range of indigenous missiles is “deliberately limited” to 2,000 kilometres.
“This is solely for our own defense. Our missiles are defensive in nature; they are built purely for deterrence and to help us defend ourselves — exactly as they did last June,” Araghchi said, referring to a US-backed Israeli attack on Iran.
He stressed that Iran did not initiate last year’s conflict with Israel, asserting that Tel Aviv and Washington carried out attacks that killed several top military commanders and nuclear scientists.
