The Capital Prepares To Host The 2026 San José Marathon
Next Sunday, June 7, starting at 5:00 a.m., the 2026 BCR San José Marathon will take place, an event that will bring together 5,000 national and international runners, starting and finishing in Central Park.
The competition will offer 5K, 10K, 21K, and 42K courses, as well as General, Master, Tricycle, and Accessibility categories.
As part of the race, participants will receive a collectible medal corresponding to this edition, dedicated to the letter“S,” linked to the value of solidarity. This is the penultimate piece to complete the name of the city: San José.
“Our city is proud to promote the 2026 San José Marathon. This event not only promotes sports and healthy lifestyle, but also boosts the local economy, drives tourism, and strengthens the sense of community that characterizes our capital. We invite all San José families to join this great sporting event, either by participating or by cheering from the sidewalks for the 5,000 athletes who will run through the streets of San José,” said Diego Miranda, mayor of San José.
From the Cantonal Sports Committee, its administrative and financial director, Blanca Rosa Gutiérrez, highlighted the planning behind the activity.
“At the Cantonal Sports Committee, we work not only to organize a race, but also to promote physical activity as a tool for well-being, social integration, and community development. This marathon is a platform to strengthen the sports culture in San José and project the capital as a benchmark in the organization of large-scale athletic events.”
The event will be supported by Banco de Costa Rica (BCR) as the official sponsor.
“Banco de Costa Rica is proud to be the official sponsor of the 2026 BCR San José Marathon. We firmly believe that this is not just a sporting event, but an initiative that unites us through effort, discipline, and health. With this support, we contribute to the development of athletes and reaffirm our social commitment to the population,” said Natalia Suárez, BCR Public Relations Manager.
Runners will have access to hydration stations every 2.5 kilometers and the support of 250 volunteers distributed along the route.
Prior to the competition, the Marathon Expo will take place on June 5 and 6 at the National Stadium of Costa Rica, where the official runner's kit will be handed out and a meeting space will be set up for athletes and fans before the sporting event.
