Srinagar- The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved the development of a new Civil Enclave at Srinagar International Airport at an estimated cost of Rs 1,677 crore.
The project aims to significantly upgrade aviation infrastructure in the Kashmir Valley and strengthen regional connectivity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday termed the approval for a civil enclave at the Srinagar Airport by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) as a major boost to Jammu and Kashmir.
Soon after the Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the approval for the project at a briefing post the Cabinet meeting in the national capital, PM Modi wrote on X,“Today's Cabinet decision on expanding the Srinagar airport will boost the economy of J&K. It will strengthen connectivity and encourage tourism.”
The expansion of the civil enclave will mark a major milestone in strengthening aviation infrastructure and connectivity in the Kashmir Valley, an official release said.
“The project scope also includes the construction of barracks for security personnel. Operated by the Airports Authority of India within the Budgam Airbase of the Indian Air Force, the airport was designated as an international airport in 2005 and is located about 12 kilometres from Srinagar city.”
Spread over 73.18 acres, the proposed Civil Enclave will feature a state of the art terminal building covering 71,500 square metres, including 20,659 square metres of the existing structure. The new facility is designed to handle 2,900 passengers during peak hours and cater to an annual capacity of 10 million passengers.
“The expanded apron will accommodate 15 aircraft parking bays, including 1 wide-body (Code E) (9 existing and 6 proposed), while the 3,658m x 45m runway continues to be operated by the IAF. The project will also include the construction of multi-level car parking facility for 1,000 cars,” the release said.
According to the release, the architectural design of the terminal will blend modern infrastructure with Kashmir's cultural identity. The structure will incorporate traditional elements such as intricate woodwork and locally inspired craftsmanship, while ensuring operational efficiency through streamlined passenger processing systems, spacious lounges and advanced check in and security facilities.

ADVERTISEMENTThe government expects the project to give a major push to tourism and economic growth in the region.“Improved air connectivity is likely to facilitate easier access to key attractions such as Dal Lake, Shankaracharya Temple and the Mughal Gardens,” the official release said.
It said the Civil Enclave project will generate employment opportunities, attract investment and enhance Srinagar's standing as a major tourism and economic hub, marking a significant step towards world class aviation infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir.
