Australia, New Zealand Hit Russia with New Sanctions on War Anniversary

(MENAFN) Australia and New Zealand on Tuesday imposed fresh sanctions on 280 individuals, entities, and “shadow fleet vessels” linked to Russia, marking the fourth anniversary of Moscow’s ongoing war in Ukraine, according to reports.

Australia’s measures target 180 individuals, organizations, and “shadow fleet vessels” connected to Russia, focusing on the country’s finance and banking, defense, aerospace, oil and gas, transportation, and science and technology sectors, as stated by a joint announcement from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Defense Minister Richard Marles, and Foreign Minister Penny Wong.

The government described the move as Canberra’s “single largest sanctions package” since February 2022. For the first time, Australia also sanctioned cryptocurrency entities said to facilitate cross-border transactions that help Moscow circumvent existing restrictions and sustain its military operations.

With these new measures, Australia has imposed over 1,800 sanctions in response to Russia’s war on Ukraine and also lowered the Russian oil price cap from $47.60 per barrel to $44.10.

Since the conflict began, Australia has provided more than 1.7 billion Australian dollars ($1.2 billion) in assistance to Ukraine, including over 1.5 billion Australian dollars in military support.

“We will continue to take action to place further pressure on Russia’s oil revenue, and we expect businesses to prevent their supply chains from inadvertently funding Russia’s illegal and immoral invasion of Ukraine,” the statement said.

Australian officials also urged Moscow to end the war immediately and comply with international legal obligations, including protecting civilians and ensuring proper treatment of prisoners of war.
