China Demands U.S. Drop Tariffs as Supreme Court Strikes Them Down


(MENAFN) Beijing has urged Washington to dismantle its sweeping unilateral tariffs following a landmark US Supreme Court ruling that struck down multiple duties imposed by President Donald Trump, Chinese state media reported Monday.

A spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce said Beijing remains firmly opposed to unilateral trade barriers and reiterated that no side emerges victorious from a trade war, media reported.

"The unilateral measures taken by the US, including the reciprocal tariffs and fentanyl-related tariffs, not only violate international trade and economic rules but also contravene US domestic law, and they do not serve the interests of any party," the spokesperson said.

The Ministry further noted that history has consistently demonstrated the mutual benefits of stable China-US trade relations — and the shared costs of hostility between the world's two largest economies.

Beijing also signaled it would not stand idle as Washington explored alternative means of preserving the disputed trade restrictions. "We have also noted that the US is preparing to adopt alternative measures, such as trade investigations, in an attempt to maintain tariffs on its trading partners. China will closely monitor these developments and firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests," the spokesperson said.

The statement follows a ruling last week by the US Supreme Court declaring that reciprocal tariffs, fentanyl-related tariffs, and associated duties levied under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act were unlawful — delivering a significant legal blow to the Trump administration's trade policy architecture.
