Guterres Urges USD3 Billion Global AI Fund
(MENAFN) Antonio Guterres on Thursday appealed for the establishment of a $3 billion international financing mechanism dedicated to artificial intelligence, aimed at enabling developing nations to strengthen foundational capabilities and prevent widening technological disparities.
Addressing participants at the AI India summit in New Delhi, Guterres emphasized that the trajectory of AI “cannot be decided by a handful of countries or left to the whims of a few billionaires,” stressing that “AI must belong to everyone.”
“We must replace hype and fear with shared evidence and close knowledge gaps,” he said.
The UN chief noted that the United Nations General Assembly had, in the previous year, set up an independent global scientific panel focused on AI and initiated an international conversation on AI governance under the umbrella of the United Nations.
“To align efforts, uphold human rights and prevent misuse. And to advance our common safety measures, the foundation of interoperability,” he said.
Cautioning that “without investment, many countries will be logged out of the AI age,” Guterres underscored the necessity of making artificial intelligence universally attainable.
He outlined plans for a worldwide fund designed to enhance capacity in emerging economies, supporting expertise development, data access, cost-effective computing infrastructure, and inclusive innovation environments.
“Our target is $3 billion. That is less than 1% of the annual revenue of a single tech company. A small price for AI diffusion that benefits all, includes businesses building AI,” he said.
