War-Torn Syria Lands UN Deal to Revitalize Five Hospitals
(MENAFN) Syria's Health Ministry has forged a crucial partnership with the United Nations Development Program on Tuesday, signing an agreement to revitalize five medical facilities nationwide that were decimated during more than a decade of conflict.
The memorandum of understanding, backed by financial support from the German government, will restore critical infrastructure and operational capabilities at multiple public medical centers, according to a Syrian news agency. The signing ceremony took place at the Health Ministry's headquarters in Damascus.
Under the agreement, renovation and equipment upgrades will target hospitals in Jisr al-Shughour located in Idlib province, Halfaya in Hama, Taldu in Homs, the National Hospital in al-Bukamal within the Deir el-Zour countryside, and the National Hospital in Daraa, the news agency reported.
The rehabilitation initiative arrives as Syria's medical infrastructure remains in crisis following extensive damage from the brutal 14-year conflict initiated by the former Bashar al-Assad regime, spanning from 2011 through 2024.
Assad-aligned forces systematically attacked healthcare facilities, forcing numerous hospitals to cease operations. Medical personnel faced arrest or death, driving physicians and nurses to flee Syria amid fears of violent repression and security crackdowns. This mass exodus triggered a catastrophic collapse in healthcare service availability.
Assad, who ruled Syria for nearly 25 years, escaped to Russia in December 2024, bringing an end to the Baath Party's six-decade grip on power that began in 1963. A transitional government under President Ahmed al-Sharaa was established in January 2025.
