Merz Tells Europe to Stand on Its Own
(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday called on European nations to strengthen their self-reliance as the international landscape undergoes dramatic changes.
Speaking at the Frankfurt Stock Exchange’s New Year’s reception in the town of Eschborn, Merz described the current moment as one of exceptional turbulence. “We are currently experiencing what is probably the greatest period of political uncertainty and instability, and certainly a profound turning point. It is a break with the past,” he said.
He went on to note that the world is entering a phase “in which major powers are emerging again that do not want to abide by rules first and foremost but instead exercise power politics,” highlighting a shift away from rule-based cooperation toward raw geopolitical influence.
Merz emphasized that Germany is well positioned to take on a pivotal role in fostering greater unity across the continent, which he sees as essential for Europe’s independence.
“If we as Europeans act in a united and determined manner, we can make a difference in the world. We can achieve more than we sometimes believe ourselves capable of,” he added, underscoring the potential of collective European action.
According to Merz, there is a clear route toward building a “sovereign, free, peaceful and economically prosperous Europe,” provided member states commit to shared goals and long-term cooperation.
He further underlined the need for Europe to enhance its ability to defend itself, improve the attractiveness and competitiveness of its economic environment, and reduce reliance on external technologies by boosting its own innovation capacity.
Reflecting on ties with the United States, Merz acknowledged shifting dynamics, saying, “Transatlantic relations have changed. But nostalgia or memories of old times do not help us. We must get things under control now if we want to play a role in this global transformation phase,” urging swift and pragmatic action in response to global change.
