US Justice Department Removes Epstein Files Over Victim Privacy Concerns

(MENAFN) The US Department of Justice has taken down “several thousand documents and media files” from its public website after acknowledging that some files related to Jeffrey Epstein may have inadvertently revealed identifying information about victims, according to reports.

A letter submitted by Jay Clayton, US attorney for the Southern District of New York, explained that the move followed calls from lawyers representing more than 200 alleged Epstein victims, who urged federal judges to order an immediate removal of the materials. "It came after lawyers representing more than 200 alleged victims of late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein urged federal judges to order the immediate takedown of the Epstein files website, citing widespread failures to redact victims’ identities," the letter stated.

The Justice Department said it worked continuously over the weekend after the first concerns were raised and removed documents that may have inadvertently included victim-identifying information due to technical or human errors. "To that end, out of the larger production described above, the Department now has taken down several thousands of documents and media that may have inadvertently included victim-identifying information due to various factors, including technical or human error," the letter added.

Authorities noted that nearly all files specifically flagged by victims or their attorneys were removed, along with a substantial number of other documents identified by the department itself, which are still under review.

In a separate letter to US District Judges Richard Berman and Paul Engelmayer, attorneys Brad Edwards and Brittany Henderson emphasized the urgency of protecting survivors, saying the release of millions of pages of documents exposed names and personal details of dozens of victims, many of whom were minors at the time of abuse. "For the victims of Jeffrey Epstein, every hour matters. The harm is ongoing and irreversible," they wrote.

According to reports, at least 43 victims’ full names were left unredacted in the files released on Friday, with some appearing over 100 times.
