Iran Warns Trump May have Power to Start Conflict

(MENAFN) Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, warned that while President Donald Trump may have the power to initiate conflict, he cannot control how it concludes. At the same time, Ghalibaf emphasized that Tehran remains open to negotiations, but only if they are genuine and not forced through intimidation or military pressure.

“We are ready for negotiations,” Ghalibaf said, while adding, “We do not believe this is the kind of dialogue the American president is seeking.” He criticized Washington for undermining diplomacy with coercive actions, noting that US forces “bombed the negotiating table two days before the sixth round of talks with Iran.”

Ghalibaf stressed that any discussions must include clear benefits for the Iranian people. “As long as the economic interests of the Iranian people are not guaranteed, there will be no negotiations,” he said. He further rejected the notion of imposed dialogue, asserting, “We do not consider dictation to be negotiation.”

The parliament speaker also warned that talks conducted under the shadow of military threats would only heighten tensions. “Negotiations in the shadow of war fuel tensions,” he said. Ghalibaf suggested that if Trump truly sought a Nobel Peace Prize, he should separate himself from advisers pushing for war or submission.

These comments came in response to Trump’s recent statement about sending a “massive armada” toward Iran while calling for Tehran to engage in talks. Iranian officials have responded with repeated warnings of possible retaliation, insisting that any discussions must be fair and noncoercive.

The remarks also reflect the ongoing unrest in Iran, where protests erupted at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar on December 28 due to the sharp decline of the rial and worsening economic conditions, later spreading to other cities. Officials have accused the US and Israel of supporting “armed rioters” to create a pretext for foreign intervention, warning that any attack would trigger a “swift and comprehensive” response.
