Sarah Mullally Gets Appointed as First Female Archbishop of Canterbury
(MENAFN) Sarah Mullally was officially confirmed on Wednesday as the first woman to lead the Church of England in its 1,400-year history, becoming the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury.
The 63-year-old’s appointment was formally recognized by ecclesiastical judges during a ceremony at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London.
“A profound service of Confirmation of Election today, it reflected the diversity of the Anglican Communion and the Church of England,” Mullally said in a video statement shared on the US social media platform X. She is a married mother of two.
In October 2025, the Church of England announced that Mullally, who had served as the Bishop of London and previously worked as a cancer nurse, would succeed Justin Welby as the next archbishop.
Welby stepped down in November 2024 following allegations that he failed to adequately act on information regarding a prolific child abuser, which allowed further abuse to occur, according to reports.
