NOPD Recruit Gets Detained by ICE Over Immigration Status—Police Chief

(MENAFN) A recruit enrolled in the New Orleans Police Department’s training program was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement due to questions surrounding his immigration status, according to statements made by the city’s police leadership.

Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said the individual, who was actively attending the police academy, was taken into custody either earlier that day or within the previous 24-hour period. “We learned about it this morning,” she told reporters while addressing the situation.

Kirkpatrick emphasized that the arrest was carried out calmly and without resistance. “There was no struggle involved. The recruit was taken into custody without any incident whatsoever,” she said.

The superintendent declined to disclose the recruit’s name or specific details about his case, directing all inquiries regarding his identity and legal status to immigration authorities.

She explained that nothing during the department’s screening and hiring process suggested the individual was unlawfully present in the country. “There was nothing in the (personnel) packet that would have given us reason to believe that this person did not have legal status,” Kirkpatrick said.

According to her account, the recruit submitted his application to the department in June 2025 and provided documentation typically required for employment, including a valid driver’s license and a Social Security number. He also successfully cleared the federal E-Verify system used to confirm work eligibility.

Kirkpatrick said the department was later notified by ICE that an immigration judge had issued a removal order for the recruit on Dec. 5, 2025, after he had already applied to join the police force. “The order of removal occurred after we had already hired him,” she said, adding that the decision appeared to have come from an immigration court in Atlanta, Georgia.

She further noted that the recruit has lived in the United States for roughly a decade and previously resided in the state of Georgia.
