Internet Services Reinstated in Uganda

(MENAFN) Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) declared Monday that nationwide internet access has been completely reinstated, bringing an end to the blackout imposed throughout the electoral period.

In an official statement, UCC confirmed that digital connectivity has returned to full capacity countrywide. Restrictions were removed after authorities completed what they described as "necessary technical and security assessments."

The commission commended "the patience, cooperation and understanding shown during the period of limited internet access."

The East African nation experienced a total internet shutdown before the January 15 nationwide vote.

UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo justified the disruption as essential for addressing national security concerns during the electoral process.

Incumbent President Yoweri Museveni secured a seventh consecutive term after capturing 71.65% of votes cast in the presidential race. His primary opponent, Robert Kyagulanyi—widely recognized as Bobi Wine—garnered 24.72% of the ballots.

At 81 years old, Museveni ranks as the continent's fourth-longest-reigning leader, having governed for 40 years. His continued rule was facilitated by constitutional amendments abolishing age and term restrictions in both 2005 and 2017.
