S. Korea former PM to spend over two decades in jail
(MENAFN) Former South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo was sentenced to 23 years in prison on Wednesday for his role in supporting a brief declaration of martial law that temporarily suspended civilian governance.
Seoul Central District Court Judge Lee Jin-gwan stated that Han “disregarded his duty and responsibility as prime minister until the very end” and emphasized that the martial law decree, issued by then-President Yoon Suk Yeol in December 2024, amounted to an insurrection aimed at undermining the constitutional order.
The sentence exceeds the eight-year term sought by prosecutors. Han, 76, must report to prison immediately. Judge Lee highlighted that Han, despite expressing some concerns to Yoon, failed to explicitly oppose the martial law declaration or mobilize other Cabinet members to intervene.
During the trial, Han denied any wrongdoing, insisting he never supported or facilitated the decree. Following Yoon’s impeachment and removal by the Constitutional Court in April 2025, Han briefly served as acting president and considered a presidential run, which ultimately faltered when Yoon’s party declined to nominate him.
