Rescue Efforts Ongoing as Dozens Missing in Indonesia Landslide

(MENAFN) The fatality count from a devastating landslide that hit Indonesia on Saturday has reached 38, while emergency crews continue scouring the disaster zone for scores of individuals still unaccounted for in West Java, state media confirmed Tuesday.

Recovery teams extracted four additional victims from the wreckage, a news agency reported, referencing statements from local authorities.

Officials have successfully identified 20 of the deceased and released their remains to grieving relatives. According to Monday's briefing, approximately 61 individuals were still presumed missing.

The National Disaster Management Agency confirmed that rescue operations pressed forward Tuesday, mobilizing roughly 800 personnel to the site.

The calamity has uprooted at least 685 residents, all of whom have been evacuated to secure locations.

Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff Muhammad Ali disclosed Monday that 23 military servicemembers were swallowed by the earth during a training drill in the affected zone. Four have been confirmed deceased, while 19 remain missing.

The massive earth movement tore through a village in West Bandung regency Saturday, entombing dozens of dwellings beneath cascading mud and rubble.

Search-and-rescue efforts persist in the stricken area, where treacherous topography presents formidable challenges, while meteorological forecasts predict moderate to extremely heavy precipitation in coming days, further hampering recovery operations.
