Trump tells Canada to be “grateful” after Carney’s WEF speech

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump on Wednesday criticized Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, saying Canada should feel “grateful” to the United States following Carney’s well-received address at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.

“We're building a golden dome that's going to, just by its very nature, be defending Canada. Canada gets a lot of freebies from us, by the way. They should be grateful also, but they're not,” Trump said during remarks in Davos.

He singled out Carney, adding, “I watched the prime minister yesterday. He wasn't so grateful.

They should be grateful to the US. Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that Mark the next time you make your statements.”

Carney’s speech, which earned a standing ovation, highlighted the erosion of the post-war rules-based international order and stressed that middle powers like Canada must adapt to rising global rivalry. He stated, “The old order is not coming back. We shouldn't mourn it,” and warned Canadians that relying on geography and alliances no longer guarantees prosperity and security.

Tensions between the two nations have increased after Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian goods and paused trade talks over an anti-tariff advertisement aired in the US.
