Canadian court blocks government order to shut down TikTok
(MENAFN) A Canadian federal court on Wednesday overturned the government’s directive that required TikTok to halt its business operations, allowing the company to keep its offices open while authorities carry out a fresh assessment, as stated by reports.
The decision comes after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent trip to China. No statements have yet been issued by ByteDance or TikTok regarding the ruling.
The government had initially ordered TikTok Technology Canada Inc. to cease operations in November 2024 following a national security review under the Investment Canada Act. Officials cited concerns over “specific national security risks related to ByteDance Ltd.’s operations in Canada … including how … information is likely to be protected, managed, used and shared by foreign actors.”
The original order had applied to TikTok’s corporate activities, while Canadian users were still allowed to access the app.
