Chinese AI chip firms take leading spots in 2025 ranking
(MENAFN) A recent report on China’s leading AI companies shows that firms specializing in AI chips dominate the sector, claiming seven of the top ten positions in 2025, according to reports.
The top three companies on the list — Cambricon, Moore Threads, and MetaX — all focus on AI chips. Among the 18 newly ranked firms, 10 also operate in the AI chip industry, as indicated by the Hurun China AI Top 50 ranking released on Monday.
Rupert Hoogewerf, chairman and chief researcher of the Hurun Report, attributes this dominance in part to tighter U.S. export restrictions on high-end AI chips, which have accelerated China’s push for self-reliance in computing power.
The report highlights China’s strengthened position in AI in 2025. Drawing on usage data from 100 trillion tokens on a third-party platform, it notes that the market share of Chinese open-source models, which was only 1.2 percent at the end of 2024, has grown significantly, at times nearing 30 percent.
The ranked companies are generally young, with an average age of 12 years. The newest entrants — Moonshot AI, Baichuan AI, and StepFun — were founded in 2023 and focus on AIGC large models.
The list also features companies active in emerging AI applications such as AI-driven drug discovery, autonomous driving technology, and enterprise decision-making, reflecting rapid real-world adoption of AI in China.
The report emphasizes that these AI firms increasingly act as “enablers,” helping sectors like consumer electronics and new energy vehicles compete on the global stage.
Beijing hosts the largest number of ranked companies, with 19, followed by Shanghai with 14 and Shenzhen with 6. Collectively, China’s first-tier cities account for over 80 percent of the ranked enterprises, demonstrating a strong clustering effect within the nation’s AI industry.
