India’s Reliance Pauses Lithium Cell Plans

(MENAFN) India’s Reliance Industries has suspended its initiative to produce lithium-ion battery cells after being unable to obtain the necessary technology from a planned Chinese collaborator, Bloomberg reported on Monday.

The Chinese supplier of lithium iron phosphate, Xiamen Hithium Energy Storage Technology Co., which had been negotiating with Reliance to grant a license for the essential technology, has exited the arrangement, the outlet noted, citing unnamed insiders.

In October 2025, China introduced limitations on rare earths and associated technologies, covering permanent magnets, batteries, components, and processing methods, following heightened trade frictions with the United States.

This situation has led Reliance to redirect its efforts toward assembling battery energy storage systems (BESS), essentially containers for its renewable energy ventures, according to the Bloomberg account.

“You will note that BESS manufacturing, battery pack manufacturing, and cell manufacturing have always been part of our energy storage plans and we are progressing well in their execution,” a Reliance representative stated to Bloomberg via email.

Back in August, Reliance informed its investors that its large-scale battery facility would commence operations in 2026.

Meanwhile, Beijing is said to be negotiating with Washington regarding heavy rare-earth magnets and related technologies. Reports suggest China is reluctant to supply India without guarantees that these materials will not be redirected to the US, according to a news agency.

As of October, New Delhi had not yet accepted the conditions, the news agency report added.
