Govt Pushes GI Registration For 33 Northeastern Handloom & Handicraft Products

(MENAFN- KNN India) Dispur, Jan 9 (KNN) The Textiles Committee under the Ministry of Textiles and the North Eastern Handloom and Handicraft Development Corporation (NEHHDC), a government enterprise under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the North Eastern Region Conclave held in Guwahati, Assam.

The MoU aims to strengthen Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protection for traditional handloom and handicraft products from the Northeastern states through registration under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.

As part of the initial phase, the collaboration will facilitate GI registration for 33 products, including 18 from Nagaland and 15 from Meghalaya.

Under the agreement, the two organisations will work in coordination with Central and State Governments to support the development of textiles, handlooms, handicrafts, khadi and allied sectors in the region.

The partnership is intended to create a structured framework for safeguarding and promoting region-specific products.

Beyond GI registration, the MoU places emphasis on post-registration initiatives such as capacity building, branding and strengthening market linkages. These measures are aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability and wider recognition of Northeastern crafts.

The initiative is expected to enhance protection of traditional knowledge and craftsmanship, improve domestic and international visibility of Northeastern products, and support income generation and market expansion for artisans and weavers in the region.
