France expresses regret over US military action in Venezuela

(MENAFN) France on Monday expressed regret over the apparent disregard for international law in the recent US military operation in Venezuela, emphasizing the need for a lawful and peaceful resolution to the crisis.

“International law was not respected in the means of action used. We regret that,” Pascal Confavreux, a spokesperson for the French Foreign Ministry, told a news outlet.

Confavreux also acknowledged Maduro’s controversial record, noting that the Venezuelan president “lost his popular legitimacy and had not recognized the July 2024 elections” and “carried out political imprisonments.” “So, we are not going to regret him,” he added, referring to Maduro’s capture by US forces.

He stressed that France is monitoring the situation and anticipates a “peaceful” transition. “We are preparing for this advent of the law of the strongest, but we do not accept it,” Confavreux said.

Government spokesperson Maud Bregeon reinforced the position, noting that France “will not shed tears over the departure” of Maduro, whom she described as a “dictator.” She called for Venezuela to move toward a democratic future: “It is now necessary to allow Venezuela to look beyond the Maduro era, with a peaceful and democratic transition. That starts with the release of political prisoners and genuine recognition of the 2024 elections.”

The remarks follow US President Donald Trump’s announcement that a military operation over the weekend led to the capture of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were subsequently flown to New York. Trump also pledged to temporarily assert American control over the country, including the deployment of US troops if needed.

Maduro and Flores are currently being held at a detention center in Brooklyn, facing US federal charges related to drug trafficking and alleged links to gangs designated as terrorist organizations. Maduro has denied the allegations, and officials in Caracas have called for the couple’s release.
