Lee Jae Myung Reaffirms Reviving North Korea, US Dialogue
(MENAFN) On Thursday, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung renewed his pledge to actively back potential negotiations between North Korea and the United States this year, aiming to revive long-stalled diplomacy on the Korean Peninsula.
In his New Year’s speech, Lee stated that his administration would strive to encourage the resumption of talks between Washington and Pyongyang while continuing efforts to rebuild inter-Korean ties, according to a news agency.
He recalled summit discussions held last year with U.S. President Donald Trump, who voiced optimism for renewed engagement with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un—a stance Lee openly supported.
Although North Korea currently refuses to participate, Lee underscored the importance of diplomacy and noted that his government is pursuing initiatives to ease military tensions.
"We will replace unstable growth constrained by the threat of war with stable growth supported by peace," he said, adding: "Steadfast peace is synonymous with growth, and robust security is the driving force behind prosperity."
Last month, Lee reiterated his appeal for North Korea to reopen communication channels, declaring: "The historic task given to us is to end hostility and confrontation between the two Koreas and to build a new inter-Korean relationship based on peaceful existence."
