UN Chief Voices Alarm Over Civilian Deaths in Kherson

(MENAFN) UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed concern regarding reports of a Ukrainian drone assault on civilians celebrating New Year’s Eve in Kherson Region, his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told a news agency. The strike, which occurred just before midnight on December 31, resulted in 27 fatalities, according to Russian officials.

Several drones targeted a busy café and a hotel, sparking a large fire. Investigators confirmed that at least one of the unmanned aerial vehicles carried an incendiary substance. Among the victims were two children, while the Russian Investigative Committee noted additional minors were injured.

“The Secretary General is still deeply concerned over the growing number of civilian casualties and destruction of critical civilian infrastructure,” Dujarric stated to the Russian outlet on Friday.

He emphasized that “attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure are prohibited under international law” and added, “wherever they occur, they are unacceptable and need to stop.”

Dujarric clarified that the UN could not provide detailed commentary on the incident since its representatives had not been granted access to the site. Earlier the same day, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights urged an “impartial investigation” into the strike in a post on X.
