Spain signs major deal to acquire Turkish HURJET jet trainers
(MENAFN) Spain has signed an agreement with Türkiye to purchase 30 units of the Turkish jet trainer aircraft HURJET, valued at €2.4 billion ($2.8 billion), officials announced on Monday.
Türkiye’s first domestically developed jet trainer has achieved a milestone export success, being officially selected by the Spanish Air and Space Forces, according to reports. Haluk Gorgun, head of Türkiye’s Defense Industries Secretariat, described the deal as a “concrete demonstration of Türkiye's position as a trusted, preferred, and leading exporter in the defense industry.”
Deliveries are expected to begin in 2028. Gorgun highlighted that the agreement represents a “high-value-added, multi-dimensional defense industry export package” that includes the HURJET aircraft, an integrated training system for advanced combat pilot instruction, ground-based simulation and training systems, maintenance infrastructure, and long-term operational support.
He emphasized that incorporating a domestically designed and manufactured jet trainer into the inventory of a European NATO member showcases Türkiye’s achievements in design, production, system integration, certification, and sustainability. “With HURJET, Türkiye is becoming a structure that produces and exports high technology in the field of air platforms and has a say in the global market,” Gorgun added, noting that Turkish defense exports are reaching new levels in both quality and scale.
Earlier this year, Spain signed a preliminary agreement to import HURJET in May and authorized the acquisition of a modern fighter pilot training system using a customized version of the supersonic aircraft in October.
The HURJET project began in August 2017, with the aircraft’s maiden flight taking place in April 2023. Prior milestones included the first completed component entering the final assembly line in June 2022, followed by comprehensive ground tests covering landing gear, wiring, canopy mechanisms, and full avionics, electrical, and fuel systems.
