Zelenskyy seeks ‘final agreement’ with US to end war with Russia
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday stated that Kyiv is working toward a “final agreement” with the United States to end the war with Russia, following high-level discussions between Ukrainian officials and envoys of President Donald Trump.
“We sense that America wants to reach a final agreement, and from our side, there is full cooperation. Ukraine has never been, and will never be, an obstacle to peace,” Zelenskyy said, noting that his negotiating team, including Rustem Umerov and Andrii Hnatov, returned with strengthened drafts of potential agreements.
While pursuing diplomatic avenues, Zelenskyy stressed the importance of continued international support, particularly the provision of air defense missiles and funding for weapons to counter attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
He also confirmed discussions with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding a recently approved €90 billion ($106 billion) package for the next two years, describing it as a “historic decision” for enhancing national resilience.
Domestically, the Ukrainian government is managing a large-scale social assistance program.
Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko noted that nearly 18 million people applied for the “Winter Support” initiative, with the application deadline coinciding with the Christmas holiday and funds scheduled to remain available through June.
Kyiv’s outreach to the Trump administration comes as Ukraine seeks to secure its geopolitical position ahead of potential shifts in US foreign policy. The government has been focused on obtaining long-term financial guarantees from the European Union and military support from Western partners to strengthen its leverage in forthcoming negotiations.
