U.S., Venezuela Jam Satellite Navigation Signals in Parts of Caribbean

(MENAFN) Electronic warfare between Washington and Caracas is disrupting satellite navigation across Caribbean waters, creating potential hazards for civilian aircraft and ships, The New York Times disclosed Saturday.

Escalating hostilities between President Donald Trump and Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro have triggered a surge in GPS interference throughout the region, the publication revealed.

American naval vessels positioned in Caribbean waters during recent months have been scrambling GPS transmissions in surrounding areas, The Times reported, drawing on classified information from an unnamed US official and data analysis conducted by Stanford University.

Meanwhile, Spire Global, a satellite intelligence company, detected that Venezuela's military forces are blocking positioning signals near strategic sites—including military installations, petroleum refineries, and electrical facilities—responding to what Caracas perceives as intensifying American military encirclement.

Dual deployment of these techniques by both nations has expanded the geographic scope and strength of signal disruption, according to Logan Scott, a radio frequency specialist who contributed to developing the planet's first digital GPS technology during the 1980s.

Military operations have compromised GPS systems essential for civilian transport, the report emphasized.

This wave of GPS disruption exemplifies "one of the starkest examples of the regional effect" stemming from Trump's pressure campaign targeting Maduro, the newspaper stated.

The Trump administration contends its naval presence, including deployment of aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, aims to dismantle narcotics trafficking networks allegedly orchestrated by Venezuela's government.
