Türkiye Honors Victims of “Bloody Christmas” Massacre

(MENAFN) On Sunday, Türkiye observed the memory of Turkish Cypriots who were slain 62 years ago during the “Bloody Christmas” tragedy, which was perpetrated in 1963 by members of the Greek Cypriot militant group EOKA.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry expressed in a declaration shared on the national social media platform NSosyal: “We commemorate with mercy all our Turkish Cypriot brothers and sisters who lost their lives in the barbaric attacks by Greek Cypriots, and we honor our veterans with deep respect.”

The ministry emphasized that Türkiye will always remember the “martyrs who sacrificed their lives” for the “national cause in Cyprus.”

The statement further recalled: “62 years ago today, members of the Greek Cypriot terrorist organization EOKA carried out the Bloody Christmas massacre marking the beginning of their brutal attacks against the Turkish Cypriot people.”

It added: “EOKA terrorists failed to achieve their heinous objectives thanks to the unwavering support of Motherland and Guarantor Türkiye, as well as the courageous struggle of Turkish Cypriots—particularly the heroic members of the Turkish Resistance Organization—who fought for freedom and sovereignty.”

Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz also honored the victims, describing Bloody Christmas as “an indelible black stain in history.”

In his message on NSosyal, Yilmaz remarked that the massacre represented EOKA’s attempts to eradicate Turkish Cypriots and seize control of the island. However, he stressed that the plan collapsed “thanks to the determined resistance of the Turkish Cypriot people, standing shoulder to shoulder with Motherland Türkiye.”
