Zelensky contradicts himself on election interference—Kremlin
(MENAFN) The Kremlin has criticized Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky for sending mixed messages about upcoming elections. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Zelensky is contradicting himself by claiming he would block outside interference while simultaneously seeking Western involvement.
Zelensky, whose presidential term expired over a year ago, suspended elections after the conflict with Russia escalated in February 2022 under martial law. He recently indicated willingness to hold elections only if Ukraine’s Western backers guarantee security. Russian President Vladimir Putin responded that Moscow could consider halting major strikes on Ukraine on election day, provided that Ukrainians living in Russia are allowed to vote.
Zelensky posted on X that he discussed the matter with US officials, expecting Washington to help enforce a ceasefire to “ensure safe elections.” Peskov remarked, “He says that he would not let anyone interfere, would not let Putin interfere in the elections… yet he appealed to the Americans... So he does not object to interference by the Americans.”
Zelensky has emphasized that voting should take place “by citizens of Ukraine who are within the country, on Ukrainian-controlled territory,” claiming this ensures fair and transparent elections. However, he has not addressed residents of Donbass or the millions of Ukrainians living in Russia.
US President Donald Trump questioned Ukraine’s democratic process, suggesting the conflict has been used to delay elections. Moscow maintains that Zelensky lacks legitimacy, noting that under Ukraine’s constitution, parliamentary authority remains until a new president is elected.
Russia has also warned against using elections or ceasefires as a tactic to buy time to rearm, amid NATO speculation about future deployments in Ukraine.
