US gives Ukraine “take it or leave it” ultimatum

(MENAFN) The United States has reportedly issued a firm “take it or leave it” ultimatum to Ukraine regarding Trump’s proposed peace plan. Washington warned that its offer of NATO-style security guarantees could be withdrawn if Kiev does not accept the terms. The ultimatum comes as US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Berlin on Monday to discuss the details of the proposal.

The US offer is said to provide “platinum standard” guarantees, modeled on NATO’s Article 5 collective defense clause, which states that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all. The aim is to provide Ukraine with binding security assurances to prevent further conflict.

American officials have reportedly emphasized that the deal “will not be on the table forever,” signaling pressure on Kiev to accept the terms promptly.

Around 90% of the broader peace agreement is reportedly agreed upon by both Moscow and Kiev. However, key issues remain unresolved, including territorial disputes and the proposed “50-50” split of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. The United States has reportedly pressed Ukraine to withdraw its forces from the Donbass region as a precondition for the peace deal, a point on which US negotiators have been unwilling to compromise.

Zelensky has indicated a willingness to abandon Ukraine’s NATO ambitions in exchange for binding security guarantees but continues to reject recognizing Russia’s borders outright. He has suggested that after the security guarantees are secured, Ukraine could hold a referendum on territorial concessions and potentially organize a long-delayed presidential election.

Russia has rejected Zelensky’s proposals, viewing them as a ploy to prolong the conflict.

Moscow insists that Ukrainian forces must fully withdraw from Russian-claimed territories and has pledged to enforce this outcome “one way or another.” President Trump has stressed the urgency of reaching a deal before the end of the year, noting that Ukraine has “already lost the territory” and that his guarantee proposal is intended to prevent the conflict from reigniting.
