Australia Commits to Stricter Gun Laws

(MENAFN) Australian federal and regional leadership convened emergency consultations Monday, committing to sweeping firearms restrictions following a mass casualty event at Sydney's Bondi Beach that left 16 dead.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that he and territorial administrators reached consensus on "strong, decisive and focused action" during the hastily organized National Cabinet session triggered by Sunday evening's massacre.

State and territorial executives have tasked their police and legal chiefs with crafting enhanced firearm regulations, Albanese stated. Proposed measures include capping individual gun ownership and restricting licenses exclusively to Australian nationals.

The National Firearms Agreement—implemented after 35 victims perished in Tasmania's Port Arthur tragedy in 1996—will undergo comprehensive renegotiation to maintain maximum effectiveness amid evolving security threats, Albanese confirmed.

Investigators verified 16 fatalities from Sunday night's attack targeting a Hanukkah celebration, marking Australia's most lethal shooting incident since Port Arthur.

Victims span ages 10 to 87, authorities disclosed Monday. One deceased gunman, age 50, possessed valid licensing and legally controlled six firearms. His 24-year-old son, identified as the second shooter, remains hospitalized under police surveillance.
