Netanyahu Links Sydney Incident to Australian Policies on Palestine

(MENAFN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has connected recent Australian government policies to the fatal attack on a Jewish event in Sydney over the weekend, asserting that Canberra’s backing of Palestinian statehood has intensified anti-Semitism within the country.

Two armed assailants opened fire during a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s renowned Bondi Beach on Sunday, killing 15 individuals and injuring numerous others. Police shot and killed one of the attackers, identified as the older member of a presumed father-and-son duo. A local Muslim man received commendation for confronting one of the gunmen and disarming him.

Netanyahu attributed the incident to policies implemented by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, which he accused of “promoting and encouraging anti-Semitism in Australia.” The Israeli leader indicated that he had previously cautioned the Australian government about endorsing Palestinian statehood due to these risks.

In September, Australia officially recognized Palestine at the UN General Assembly, joining several nations seeking to exert pressure on Israel amid its military operations in Gaza. Netanyahu has consistently vowed to block the creation of a viable Palestinian state.

He stated, “Your call for a Palestinian state pours fuel on the anti-Semitic fire. It rewards Hamas terrorists. It emboldens those who menace Australian Jews and encourages the Jew hatred now stalking your streets.” Netanyahu further argued that the mass shooting reflected the Australian government’s “weakness” and “inaction” in addressing the “cancer” of anti-Semitism.

Prime Minister Albanese, in contrast, emphasized domestic gun control in response to the tragedy, advocating for stricter ownership regulations. Authorities noted that the deceased suspect legally possessed six firearms, which were reportedly used in the attack.
