Australia’s PM Vows to Pursue Stricter Firearms Law
(MENAFN) Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced Monday he would pursue stricter firearms legislation during a national Cabinet meeting this afternoon, following a devastating mass shooting at Sydney's Bondi Beach.
The Sunday massacre claimed at least 16 lives—15 victims plus one assailant—while 42 individuals remained hospitalized as of Monday.
Australian police identified the two suspected shooters as a father-son pair, confirming investigators are not pursuing additional suspects. The father died at the scene, while his son remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
The Australian government "is prepared to take whatever action is necessary. Included in that is the need for tougher gun laws," Albanese stated during a press briefing.
His proposed legislative agenda encompasses restrictions on firearm quantities individuals may possess or license, alongside periodic license reviews.
"Licenses should not be in perpetuity, and checks, of course, making sure that those checks and balances are in place as well," he emphasized.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns echoed calls for legislative reform to prevent similar attacks.
"It does require legislation. It means introducing a bill to Parliament, making it more difficult to get these horrifying weapons that have no practical use in our community," he declared at a press conference, according to an Australian broadcasting agency.
International leaders universally condemned the attack.
