Authorities detain person of interest in Brown University shooting
(MENAFN) Authorities have taken a person of interest into custody following a shooting at Brown University that left at least two people dead and nine others wounded, local officials confirmed Sunday.
The mayor of Providence announced the development during a briefing, telling reporters, "We are able to report that we have detained a person of interest involved in yesterday's shooting."
Law enforcement officials said the individual was taken into custody earlier Sunday morning, though they declined to release identifying details in order to protect the ongoing investigation.
Later, police clarified that the detained individual is in their 20s, correcting earlier reports that suggested the suspect was in their 30s. Officials emphasized that no additional suspects are currently being sought, while noting that investigative work is still underway.
Authorities provided an update on the injured, stating that seven people remain hospitalized in stable condition, one is listed as critical but stable, and one individual has already been released. The mayor added, "We are not releasing any information about the victims at this time."
Officials confirmed that the shelter-in-place order affecting Brown University and nearby neighborhoods has been lifted. In a separate update, university leadership announced that "all remaining undergraduate, graduate and medical classes, exams, and papers or projects for the Fall 2025 semester will not take place as scheduled."
The shooting unfolded shortly after 4 p.m. local time on Saturday, triggering an immediate response from campus police, followed by city law enforcement, fire crews, and emergency medical personnel. Multiple agencies are assisting in the response, including federal and state authorities, with officials noting that coordination remains close as the case develops.
Earlier on Saturday, university officials initially stated that a suspect had been taken into custody, but later walked back that claim, explaining that the search for the gunman was still ongoing at the time.
