China Advises Citizens to Avoid Japan Amid Earthquakes
(MENAFN) The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Thursday released a notice urging Chinese nationals to avoid traveling to Japan in the near term, following multiple earthquakes that have struck northeastern Japan, a media outlet reported.
Since Dec. 8, the region has experienced several tremors, including a 7.5 magnitude earthquake, which have resulted in numerous injuries, caused visible tsunamis, and prompted evacuation directives affecting over 100,000 residents, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry’s Consular Affairs Department on WeChat.
Late Monday night, a strong 7.5 magnitude quake hit northeastern Japan, injuring at least 50 individuals and raising warnings of potential further seismic activity this week.
In the hours following the main earthquake, multiple aftershocks ranging from magnitude 5.0 to 6.6 were recorded. Japanese authorities have cautioned that the area could face another quake of similar or even greater strength in the coming days.
In response, the Chinese Foreign Ministry, alongside the Chinese Embassy and consulates in Japan, has advised citizens to refrain from traveling to Japan at present.
Those already in Japan are encouraged to stay updated on earthquake alerts and secondary disaster warnings, follow local evacuation instructions, take safety precautions, and avoid high-risk locations such as coastal areas.
This latest advisory follows an earlier notice issued by the Foreign Ministry on Nov. 14, which similarly recommended that Chinese nationals postpone travel to Japan due to security concerns amid ongoing tensions between China and Japan over Taiwan.
