A controversy erupted at Khyber Teaching Hospital after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and Member of the National Assembly, Iqbal Afridi, allegedly forced his way into the female ward on December 5, prompting strong reactions from hospital staff and administration.

According to hospital officials, Iqbal Afridi had visited the hospital to see his mother, who was admitted for treatment. However, the administration stated that male entry into the female ward is strictly prohibited and that only one female attendant is allowed with each patient as per hospital policy. When doctors and staff tried to stop him from entering the ward, he allegedly threatened and pushed hospital staff.

The hospital administration strongly condemned the incident, stating that unauthorized entry into the ward poses a serious threat to the privacy and security of female patients and healthcare workers. Officials emphasized that such actions create fear and disruption in a sensitive medical environment.

In his statement to TNN, Iqbal Afridi denied the allegations, saying that he only went into the ward to meet his mother and stayed inside for just 16 seconds. He rejected claims of threatening or pushing anyone and argued that as a public representative, the Constitution grants him the right to go wherever he wishes.

Citing the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Healthcare Service Providers and Facilities Act, hospital sources said that threatening or assaulting doctors or hospital staff during duty can lead to up to three years in prison and a fine of Rs 50,000.

Senior journalist and health reporter Zahid Mirrokhail said that laws already exist to prevent such incidents and stressed that only authorized individuals should be allowed inside hospital wards. He added that such behavior by an elected representative damages the reputation of PTI and that the hospital administration has the right to initiate legal action.

The administration of Khyber Teaching Hospital announced that female patients, their attendants, and medical staff in the ward have condemned the MNA's conduct and vowed to ensure strict enforcement of hospital rules and legal procedures.

However, when contacted for further details, the spokesperson of Khyber Teaching Hospital promised to share more information but did not respond to repeated follow-up calls.
