Tom Barrack Predicts Swift Resolution to US, Türkiye Disputes

(MENAFN) US Ambassador to Türkiye and Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack voiced optimism on Friday that lingering disagreements between Washington and Ankara could be resolved within four to six months, characterizing the bilateral connection as resilient and steady.

During remarks at a Milken Institute gathering in the UAE, the envoy underscored the close rapport between US President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, portraying it as an extraordinary relationship that has significantly influenced cooperation between the two nations.

He emphasized Türkiye’s status as NATO’s second-largest partner after the EU, noting that despite this strategic importance, Europe has not genuinely contemplated Türkiye’s integration into the union.

On matters regarding Israel, he asserted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not pursuing the concept of a “Greater Israel” and contended that Israel faces pressure from various fronts. He added that such an aspiration could only be achieved through commerce and economic growth rather than through military pursuits.

Discussing US penalties tied to the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) and the long-running F-16 and F-35 disagreements, Barrack stated that the discourse has persisted for nearly a decade.

He remarked that Trump regarded the sanctions as ineffective and understood Türkiye’s defense manufacturing strengths along with its drone exports to Ukraine.

Although the US has yet to supply fighter jets to Türkiye, he highlighted that Türkiye has acquired Eurofighter Typhoons and continues to be an essential contributor to the F-35 initiative.
